This poem appeared in the December 22, 1864, issue of the Vicksburg Daily Herald accompanied by a notation that it was written for the Herald. The "milish" to which the anonymous author refers was the E.M.D.V. - Enrolled Militia District of Vicksburg. All able-bodied men living in occupied Vicksburg were required to be a member or face fine and imprisonment.
As always, our thanks to Jeff Giambrone of Vicksburg's Old Couthouse Museum for contributing this marvelous piece of poetry.
