Albert Sidney Johnston, thought by Confederate President Jefferson Davis to be the brightest and best of his generals, was killed at the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1861. Not realizing the seriousness of his injury, Johnston sent his surgeon to tend to the wounded elsewhere and subsequently bled to death.
