"The Shade of the Trees" is Margaret Junkin Preston's tribute to her former
brother in law Stonewall Jackson, who was acidentally shot by his own men
following the Battle of Chancellorsviile in May 1863 and died of pneumonia 10
days later. "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees"
are reported to have been the last words Jackson ever spoke.
