Benjamin Terry was the first colonel of the 8th Texas Cavalry, better known as Terry's Texas Rangers. Colonel Terry was killed in action in Kentucky in 1861, but the regiment carried his name for the remainder of the War. The "Magnolia City" referred to in the poem is Houston.

The poem appears to have been composed shortly after Terry's death and was published in the fourth issue of Confederate Veteran magazine in April 1893. The author, a resident of Austin, Tex., was probably one of Terry's men.
