In the University of Virginia Cemetery in Charlottesville, in the section reserved for
the Confederate dead, stands a monument to the Southern soldiers buried there. Of all
the names engraved on that monument, perhaps none is more touching than that of a
young soldier from Mississippi, so recently transferred into his regiment that no one
had had time to learn his last name before he died in battle. He was memorialized
simply as "Jim ---, of Biloxi."
