This poem is typical of many written in the bitter aftermath of the South's defeat.

The figure "who came among us as we slept" is Stonewall Jackson, who died May 10, 1863, following the Battle of Chancellorsville. The figure "clothed with power" is Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America.
