This piece was written in 1865 by Corporal Theodore P. Brokaw of Company D, 14th Brooklyn, to commemorate the 14th's part in the Battle of Gettysburg and the march of the Army of the Potomac from the Rappahannock. He was 23 years old when he was wounded in action on the field at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The poem is printed in the 14th's regimental history.
Many thanks to Marc A. Hermann of the 14th "Brooklyn" Regiment, N.Y. State Militia, Company H, for contributing this poem.
