Immortalized for 20th Century viewers in the movie "Glory," Robert Gould Shaw was the son of well-to-do Boston abolitionists and the colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the black regiment that led a suicidal charge against Fort Wagner on the South Carolina coast.
