The batteries that fired the first shots of the War Between the States were commanded by Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, who directed his fire against his old West Point artillery instructor Major Robert Anderson, commander of the Federal garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.
