Duval Porter was born in Appomattox County, Virginia, in 1844. Interested in writing from an early age, he became a contributor to the local papers at the age of fourteen. Porter was also a gifted linguist who spoke German, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, and Latin. Among his many volumes of published works were ""Lyrics of the Lost Cause" (J.T. Townes, Danville, Va., 1914, from which this poem is taken), "Alphonso, and Other Poems," "Mere Places and Things," "Adventures of an Office-Seeker," and "The Same Old Fool." Whether he served in the Confederate Army and the date of his death are at this moment unknown to the compiler of this Web site.
